Mobile Web 2.0: Californian greenhouse gas or a new force in emerging telephony?
Is mobile Web 2.0 a cloud of Californian greenhouse gas or a new force in emerging telephony? Andrew Orlowski’s recent Register article points to the former view, while another Register article about Nokia and T-Mobile’s USA pinning their hopes on mobile Web 2.0 paints a brighter picture. Some other mobile Web 2.0 links can be found in Richard MacManus’s tech weblog.
Andrew’s piece is very funny and worth reading for that reason alone. Keep in mind though, that he is a long standing critic of the Web 2.0 Weltenschaum - as evidenced by this 2003 response by Tim O’Reilly. Wireless.itworld provides a more sober, but equally cautionary view, from the same event. As for me, I’m going to defer comment: there are some important subtopics that need to be tackled first. These include Web 2.0 business models, social networking, search, collaboration , openness and the nature of mobile services. I’m aiming to revisit Mobile Web 2.0 in a couple of weeks and tie up the threads.
